AIM Inc. CNC Wirebender Maintenance Tips
DON’T FORGET YOUR END-OF-YEAR CNC WIREBENDER MAINTENANCE
Get ready for the holiday break by checking all the boxes
By Mitchell Stookey
’This is the season when shop floors quiet down, lights dim, and our hard-working machines finally get a well-earned rest while we enjoy time with family and friends. For many shops, the stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is the longest shutdown of the year. And when January rolls around, nothing dampens that “fresh start” feeling faster than a wirebender that refuses to wake up after a long winter’s nap.
Luckily, AIM Inc. builds everything tough—and builds it right here in the USA—so our machines are famously robust, reliable, and ready to run 24/7. A little holiday TLC keeps them humming even smoother, extending their life and minimizing downtime and parts replacement.
Before you power down for the season, here are the key maintenance checks to keep your AIM CNC wirebenders merry and bright.
Batteries
Older machines rely on batteries to retain controller and servo-drive parameters—and those batteries work hardest when power is off. Overnight, weekends, and especially during extended holiday shutdowns, they’re quietly doing their job. Swap them out before the break to make sure your parameters stay put.
Fan Filters & Airflow
Cool electronics are happy electronics. Dirty fan filters restrict airflow, cause overheating, and shorten component life. Clean or replace filters now to help your drives, power supplies, and cabinets stay cool all winter long.
Hydraulic Oil
An annual oil analysis is like a health check for your hydraulics. It catches moisture or metal content before they become bigger issues. Stick with AIM-recommended ISO 32 synthetic hydraulic oils, and replace filters based on back-pressure readings—not a calendar date.
Lubrication
Holiday downtime is prime time for a lubrication refresh.
- Apply grease to bearings, shafts, and dancer arms
- Use heavy-duty gear grease on bender gears
- Cycle the machine a few times to distribute lubrication
- Coat exposed metal surfaces with light oil to prevent rust
If you’re running an older machine with ballscrews, don’t forget to grease or oil those as well.
Tooling
Tooling usually gets a quick blast of compressed air during changeovers, but it deserves a deeper clean. Roller tools especially benefit from a wipe-down and a touch of lithium grease on the pins inside the bearing sleeve to keep everything rolling smoothly.
Inside the Cabinet
With power locked out, give your electrical cabinet a little attention:
- Tighten terminal wiring connections
- Check for heat-related wear or damaged insulation
- Blow out dust from drives and fans
These small steps go a long way in preventing unexpected shutdowns later.
Feeders & Straighteners
Keep feeding systems in top shape with consistent cleaning and inspection.
- Clean encoder shafts, rollers, and wire guides with every coil change
- Check feeder belts quarterly for tension and wear
- Inspect straightener pivots and locking pins daily
- Lubricate bearing packs annually for smooth, trouble-free operation
Cutters & Benders
Daily cleaning prevents buildup, wear, and cutting issues.
- Inspect blades and housings for cracks or leaks
- Replace O-rings every three years
- Lubricate shafts every six months
- Check gears annually and apply heavy-duty gear grease
For turret systems, verify belt tension, pulley wear, and shaft alignment.
For AIM machines with servo-driven cutters—such as the AFES line—proper cutter alignment is crucial. Adjust the control rod so the cutter cycles smoothly and quietly during a dry run. Any “clicking” means the control rod length is off, which increases wear and should be corrected.
New Wire Wipe System — NOW AVAILABLE
Preventative maintenance is essential, especially when it comes to removing the grime, grease, and metal dust that accumulate as you run miles of wire through your machine. But what if you could reduce that buildup before it ever reaches the straightener?
That’s exactly why we developed our new Wire Wipe System. After seeing countless plants using rags clamped to the wire as a makeshift solution, we created a purpose-built design—priced at just under $1K for the dry version—directly inspired by our customers’ needs.
The system features a compact device that wipes the wire before it enters your equipment:
- Multiple high-durometer rubber wipes that are easily user-replaceable
- A collection container that gathers oil and debris
- Keeps your equipment cleaner and drier
- Reduces cleaning-related downtime and improves overall production
- Low ongoing maintenance costs

SmartEditor Shutdown: Prevent Corrupted Files
Before you flip the main power switch and dash off to your holiday festivities, make sure you’re shutting your machine down the right way. Abrupt power-offs can corrupt configuration files, interrupt processes mid-write, and cause frustrating startup problems when operators return after the break.
AIM’s SmartEditor makes proper shutdown simple:
- In the SmartEditor window, go to File > Exit and Shutdown.
- Allow the software to close all active processes and safely prepare the machine for power-down.
This quick step ensures your files remain intact, your configurations stay clean, and your AIM machine wakes up in January ready to work—no surprises, no corrupted data, no downtime.
SmartEditor Backups: A Little Insurance Goes a Long Way
It’s always smart to keep an external drive handy for backing up your SmartEditor data. Before you head out for the holidays—or shut down your machine—use the SmartBack feature to save your important part programs and system data.
For extra peace of mind, make a full copy of your entire SmartEditor folder and include a date in the file name (for example: SmartEditor_Backup_12.08.2025). This gives you a clean, time-stamped archive you can rely on if you ever need to replace a hard drive or upgrade a computer in the future.
Having these backups ready means less stress, faster recovery, and a smoother restart if anything unexpected happens.
Safety Devices
Before the break, verify that scanners, mats, light curtains, and two-hand controls are installed and operational. When operators return, a quick safety refresher ensures everyone starts the year on the right foot.
Training Spotlight: AIM Academy
Keep operators sharp during downtime.
AIM Inc. offers the AIM Academy, a self‑paced online training platform built for CNC wirebender operators, technicians, and managers.
What you’ll find inside:
- Step‑by‑step tutorials on setup, programming, and maintenance
- Visual guides and videos that simplify complex processes
- Preventive maintenance best practices for lubrication, filters, and hydraulics
- Troubleshooting resources to reduce downtime
- Flexible, anytime learning — ideal during holiday shutdowns
Why it matters: Pairing hands‑on maintenance with AIM Academy’s training ensures both machines and operators are ready to hit the ground running in the new year.
